Heyward Robinson was elected to the Menlo Park City Council in November 2006. He served as Menlo Park's Vice Mayor in 2008 and as Mayor in 2009 and is currently the council's liaison to the Library and Bicycle Commissions. In 2009, he initiated the council's Business Development subcommittee, on which he currently serves along with fellow council member John Boyle.

Heyward also chairs the San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority and serves as San Mateo County representative to the Dumbarton Rail Policy Advisory Committee and the Congestion Management Program and Environmental Quality Committee. With Menlo Park Mayor Rich Cline, he serves as City Council liaison to the four public school districts that serve the children of Menlo Park: Menlo Park City, Las Lomitas, Ravenswood, and Sequoia Union. In 2007, he co-founded Menlo Park's Green Ribbon Citizen's Committee along with then Mayor Kelly Fergusson. Prior to joining the City Council, Heyward served on the city's Parks and Recreation Commission.

Heyward is a Materials Scientist with SRI International in Menlo Park. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science from Duke University and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford.

Heyward and his wife Joanna Mountain have lived in their Menlo Park home for ten years. Their sons Myles (14) and Seamus (9) attend local public schools. He is an active youth sports coach and referee. A lifelong Scouting advocate, Robinson holds the rank of Eagle Scout and volunteers with his sons' Boy Scout troops. He enjoys biking, camping, and a variety of sports. Robinson and Mountain were presented Menlo Park's 2002 Environmental Quality Award for their "outstanding efforts to conserve energy and water and to reduce pollution and waste" in their West Menlo home remodel.
