We face some daunting challenges in education that require experience, insight and courage to make the decisions necessary to ensure that the only the most qualified people are teaching our children.
Our students today are required to be global citizens who must compete in a ever-changing economy that is driven by rapid technological innovations. Our schools must teach the skills that are essential for students to adapt, transform and master new information. The teachers that we hire must understand the nature of these changes and prepare students to think critically and analyze information ,so that they can problem-solve and learn to determine their own conclusions. I am committed to ensuring that administrators ,teachers and support staff embrace these principles .However, we must also address the social and emotional needs of our students ,so that they can learn in an environment that nurtures the whole child. Many of our students come to school with serious economic needs and dysfunctional families. It is the duty of our schools to make certain that all students are received each day by a staff that is both highly-qualified and caring. As a past board member for The Ontario-Montclair School disrict,I can attest with with full confidence that the points made in this position paper are the same pledges that were carried out from 2001 to 2010.
