Our Children Deserve the Best Education

With your help, and the hard work of our teachers we can give all our children an excellent education, especially in math and science. Join me in making it happen.

My Volunteer Activities For the last decade I have been a volunteer teacher in math and science in La Honda and Pescadero schools in grades 3 to 12. The students call me "Dr. Peter" and one of my great joys is to bring them hands-on experiments and demonstrations and see them respond with great enthusiasm for science.

Some Progress For the last 9 years I have also analyzed the annual California test scores in LHPUSD in grades 2 to 8. My analysis showed that for many students math scores trended downward throughout the elementary school years. As a result I decided I needed to work on a solution. I volunteered in math classes and was dismayed to find that many middle school students do not know basic arithmetic. This will become a serious handicap in their lives, in their education, and in their self-esteem.

I worked with the superintendents, principals, the school board and teachers to improve math. I started a volunteer program called SMASH (Super Math and Science Helpers) where community members help out in math and science classes. This is having wonderful positive results. But I found we need more volunteers. I successfully applied for grants to fund math and science that brought in over $100,000 to the District. But we are not there yet. I have found the teachers and administrators are working hard to improve the students' education, especially in math and the results have been wonderful, with rising scores in many grades.

We Need More I am running for the School Board so that I can continue to support and initiate the improvements in the education of our children. I want to get more volunteers. I want more teacher training. I want more grants. I want more intervention. I want more communication with the communities. I want more involvement from parents. I want more consequences for not doing homework. I want success for all our children.

My Background and My Promise During my professional career in universities and the high tech industry I developed the ability to think critically, to work cooperatively with people of varied background, come up with workable solutions and see tasks through to the finish. With your vote I will act on your behalf to ensure that our children are supported by the best teachers and that all our children receive the quality education they deserve so they can become life-long learners and contributors to our society.

My wife and I live in La Honda and between us we have 6 children and 6 grandchildren. Our children have attended LHPUSD schools. We are committed to our schools.
