On Going Malibu Crisis Effects the SMMUSD as a WholeBy Patty FinerCandidate for Member, Board of Education; Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The On Going Malibu Crisis is not limited to only Malibu; it includes Santa Monica Schools too.In September, 2013, 4 teachers wrote to the SMMUSD to advise them that they had all been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and that the district had to know. They felt it was coming from the school. The school board jumped into action, but they became very quiet, and no additional information was given. The board has worked with different groups, but in the meantime 14 more teachers and staff became infected with this illness. Additionally, 4 young men from the class of 2003, who should be thinking about getting married and starting a family are fighting thyroid cancer. It has been reported that Malibu High has tested 7000 times normal PCBs and that other schools in the district too have the same issues, including at least two(2) schools in Santa Monica. The district's response has been a band-aid to a broken leg; which should be set, casted, and let to heal. We owe our students, teachers and staff a healthy school environment. We do not know the full impact yet, as I expect it to get worse before it gets better. The parents want the school board to be in code compliance... that is their main goal. |
