City Financing/Reserve Spending:
Like the rest of us can't spend more than we make, for years the city has been running off reserve funds to operate. It also appears that reserve spending is going to happen in the future also. Walmart, even though a welcome to Atascadero and added source of income to the city, it is not the complete answer. There is still pressing financial issues facing the city, the $7-8 million overrun on the Del Rio Roundabouts, the pending $2 million FEMA lawsuit that has already cost the city $100k, and there has been no significant increase in sales tax revenue.
Tourism: Definitely is a significant source of income, although at the same time we need to create a brand for the city as other communities have done and create an atmosphere that attracts tourists.
Sales Tax Increase: The roads are in need of past due maintenance and the people need to know that this money will go into the general fund and can be used for any vital city need. I will make sure the money is spent on the roads and not general fund usage. The voters are voting for road maintenance.
Business Fees: Supply and demand, the current council voted 4-1 to raise the fees on business, this is counter productive and will only keep the anti-business stigma that Atascadero has already. It's time to create a business relief program and give businesses real incentives to invest in our beautiful town.
