Major Issues in My Campaign: a. place crossing guard funding in future budgets b. remove the burden of sidewalk repair costs from homeowners as soon as possible and shift it back to the city ledger c. work for a new Safeway store that is in scale with the city development guidelines and in tune with accompanying zoning changes. d. nurture a culture of caring among city, school, and community e. grow our business community on the Bayfront and other vital commercial areas f. carefully calibrate mixed-use development into our downtown g. keep our residential neighborhoods beautiful, ensuring that young families are able to improve their older homes without compromising the neighbhorhood ambiance How to Deal with the Above Issues: Item a) will be accomplished by more give-and-take between the city and the school district and via a council liaison committee. I initiated the commitment to pay for crossing guards in our 2005-06 budget, one year ahead of the agreed-upon commitment. Item f) I will accomplish by working through CCAG (I am the city representative here) and T.A. as well as via our state legislators in getting the necessary funding speeded up. Ideas for Maintaining or Improving City Finances 1. embed COLA increases on city permit costs 2. continue long-term infrastructure improvements by water and sewer rate adjustments. 3. host more hotels or auto businesses 4. nurture the housing market to continue increased property tax increases Equal Opportunity = equal access to equivalent jobs for all candidates, regardless of race, color, sex, creed, sexual orientation, or physical handicaps Affirmative Action = ongoing oversight of employee conditions, monitoring fiarness in the workplace, wage equity, and fair hearings Critical State Issues for City Governance a. unfunded infrastructure needs b. misuse of gas tax for other purposes than originally legislated c. better lobbying efforts for cities and counties |
