The California Water CrisisBy Dale MyersCandidate for Board Member; Alameda County Flood Control and Water Conservation District; Zone 7 | |

Discusses the importance of having experienced local representatives fully engaged in the on-going negotiations to resolve the existing ecosystem and water supply reliability issues in the San Francisco Bay Delta. On behalf of its' customers, and under my direction as General Manager at Zone 7, we have made significant investments in local water supply facilities and water conservation programs. We've also acquired additional water supplies, improved local recharge facilities and groundwater storage capacity, and partnered with other water agencies in California to develop additional groundwater storage facilities. The result of these investments is a local water system that has been one of the most reliable in the State. The resources that were developed during the past ten years, and the current pipeline and treatment plant additions, are intended to guarantee that current and future local water needs can be met even in the most severe historically measured drought. We are doing everything we can do locally to achieve a high level of self sufficiency, however our community's water supply reliability could still be severely impacted by the current state water supply crisis and decisions pending in Sacramento. We need experienced, knowledgeable leadership on the Zone 7 Board to guide our participation in those discussions to help insure that the final outcome is one that's affordable to our customers, and has long-term viability in providing reliable water supplies and preserving the Delta ecosystem. With my extensive experience and knowledge of Zone 7, and of the issues under discussion in Sacramento and Washington I can offer that leadership to help in shaping a solution that will ensure water supply reliability, and potentially also improve local water quality. |
